There are a lot of people who feel the need to remove or replace the bricks on their home. You will find that there are some bricks that are severely damaged. Basically, you will need to rebuild the entire wood frame of the house and the main walls of the house. You will want to make sure that you hire those who are within a close bid to the other contractors, because you don't want to have the cheap materials for such a job. A Brief Introduction to Brick and Tile

Although brick and tile are two of the oldest construction materials, they remain favorites among homebuilders and home improvement specialists today. And there's a good reason for it! Not only is brick and tile beautiful, they're strong and resistant to high winds and they're responsive to temperature - making them premium textiles for shelter and insulation.

Brick and Tile Have A History

Brick has a history that's at least six thousand years old. Made of clay, bricks are made by burning them in a kiln for a specific length of time. The end result is a collection of 2 1/4 × 3 3/4 × 8-inch blocks of heat resistant, strong, and hard block of building material. Their simple production is what lends to this material's historical and cultural expansion.

Tiles of the past were made of clay as well. Only recently have we begun tile production with synthetic plastic. Historically, facing tile is the most common and you've surely seen this style of tile as a flat glazed square. Another style that you might be familiar with is terra cotta - hard-unglazed brownish-red earthenware. Terra cotta is usually applied to brick or plaster.

Brick Types

Different types of brick serve different purposes. The most widely recognized brick is a reddish clay and sand combination that might have a hole in the middle of it. This kind of brick is known as a Kiln Brick. Facing brick is kiln-burned also; however it has a smoother and more attractive surface. As a result, facing brick is used on visible parts of buildings where kiln bricks are reserved for non-visible parts - just like the common brick. You will typically find the common brick along sidewalls. As decoration, brick veneer is thinner (shallow) than the others and is used (with mortar) to surface interior walls.

Brick veneer isn't the only type of brick that's used for aesthetic purposes however. You can create an interesting atmosphere within your home with tapestry brick, which is impressed with a design, or with molded brick, which is shaped into interesting forms (curves, arches, etc.).

Tile Types

Interestingly, you'll find a lot more different kinds of tile than you'll find of brick. We've already introduced terra cotta, but we haven't touched on facing tile (otherwise known as flooring or wall tile). Like facing brick, facing tile is meant for visible areas.

Italian Faience tile is known for it's opaque glazes whereas Spanish Majolica tile is known for its bright surfaces. Dutch Delft tile shows off an oriental appearance with white or blue hues.

As you can see, you have a wide selection of both tile and brick to pick and choose from when you're thinking about laying out a new floor or wall or even counter top. What Are Hard Landscaping Materials?

In landscape design and architecture, hard landscaping materials refer to construction materials that a designer or architect uses to enhance the landscape design. Some examples of hard landscaping materials include stones, bricks, gravel, concrete, glass, and the like. The matching term soft landscaping materials refers to the plants.

Here are some common hard landscaping materials to get you familiar with these important elements in your landscape design:

Pavers are widely used in landscaping . There is a wide range of pavers to choose from to suit different areas in your home such as a patio, driveway, walkway, pool area atc. Soils are valuable hard landscaping materials. To improve soil condition in the yard or garden, add organic fertilizing matter or compost. Remember to choose plants that match or thrive on the type of soil that area has.

Because of the broad range of hard landscaping materials, choosing the right product can be overwhelming and confusing. Just remember to select materials that will both go well with the site, the plants, other hard landscaping materials and the overall theme of the garden. For instance, materials made of steel and metal may not go well with an Asian inspired garden. Highly reflective materials are not ideal for areas that get a lot of sunlight. There are also certain pavers that are suitable only for light foot traffic and should not be used on driveways. You should also make sure that the hard landscaping materials you use are durable enough to withstand the type of weather and climate in your area.

Building a patio with brick

Building a patio with brick is probably the easiest way to accomplish a patio project. It is easy for the do it yourselfer and can be very elegant.

Measure out the area you have in mind and start. If you’re a first timer, then it is probably best to have a rectangular design, although a circular one is also possible, but you would have to start cutting bricks. Make sure your angles are correct. While this is very important, also keep in mind that you will need two inches on the edges to place brick edging.

Clear the area you have chosen by digging it out to a depth of 8 inches. Place a frame around the inside of this area. Keep in mind that you must have a gentle slope for drainage, especially if you’re building the patio close to your house. Now you can do a run with your brick just to make sure everything is lined up and going to fit, and again don’t forget your 2 inch edging.

Pour crushed stone into your area to a depth of 4 inches, tamp down your stone and place a weed blanket over it to protect your patio from weeds growing up through. Now you can pour your sand and it must be 2 inches deep. You now need a screed to level this sand - a piece of 2x4 with a looped rope tied to it will do the trick. After leveling the sand it must be tamped down, check again to make sure it is level.

Now you can begin to lay your brick. Make sure you have a mason’s line to keep you on the straight and narrow while you’re laying them because it will ensure that your rows will be even. Begin in a corner and press each brick firmly into the sand, and if necessary use a rubber mallet and tap them gently to place them.

Assuming you will be using 4 x 8 bricks, 2 inches thick, which is the easiest to use, you can continue with the basket weave pattern, which is simple, but can look very elegant. After laying all your brick and putting the brick edging in place, put sand over your bricks and start filling the seams. You can use a broom to ensure all seams are filled.

Your patio is complete, well, maybe not complete until you put your patio furniture on there. Then sit back and admire your job while enjoying the sunshine.

Green Building Elements: Brick

Brick may not be the first thing that springs to mind when we talk about green building. But there are qualities that bricks posess that make them worth considering as a green building material.

For starters, let’s take a look at the materials that go into brick: clay and water. That’s it. No complex chemicals, no exotic compounds, no imported components. At the end of its life, a brick is effectively just a manufactured clay stone with a special shape. It breaks down into earth since it comes from earth. Clay mining is comparatively benign, compared to ore mining for metals, which requires far more material to be extracted and processed to produce the finished product. Clay is not a resource that is in short supply, which makes it a more attractive material to use, as well.

The main reason brick isn’t an even greener building material is that it takes a lot of energy to make a brick. However, the extra energy is relative. An Australian government website comparing wood siding to brick veneer shows that exterior walls with the same backing construction with brick have about three times as much embodied energy per unit of wall area. (A timber board clad wall takes 188 MJ per square meter; brick veneer requires 561 MJ per square meter.) The tradeoff is in durability and maintenance. Brick is much lower maintenance than other materials. Most brick will last for generations with only some minor tuckpointing to repair joints.

A 100-year old building is considered old by North American standards. While a wood sided building will have been repainted many times and have had repairs and replacement of parts that have broken down over that period, the brick on a brick building of the same vintage will be little changed from the day it was first laid in place. Durability is another hallmark of green building, and a brick building that is properly designed and constructed and maintained can last for centuries.

Durability: Brick is resistant to damage from wind and water, and does not need additional finishes.
Compressive Strength: Brick can carry heavy loads, but it is often used as a veneer over a separate structural system because of cost. Many brick manufacturers provide larger brick sizes to be used in a single wythe (layer) for load bearing.
Acoustical Performance: Brick’s mass makes it good for reducing sound transmission; however, its hard surface reflects sound.
Chemical Makeup: Brick’s raw materials are chemically inert; consequently, they will not contribute to indoor air pollution.
Fire-Protection: Brick is nonflammable and makes an excellent fire barrier.
Brick and other masonry products are heavy and dense. While this makes them durable building materials, it also makes transporting them an energy-intensive process. The best way to deal with this is to use locally produced brick. In regions where brick is widely used, sources within a couple hundred miles should be easy to find. If brick is not widely used in your area, it is probably less appropriate to use, and the transportation energy required to obtain it should be considered.

Brick is also a recyclable material. Old brick walls can be carefully demolished and a high percentage of the individual bricks can be salvaged and re-used. The character and quality of good recycled brick can be very appealing, and good recycled brick sometimes even commands a higher price than some kinds of new brick. Depending on the market and the region you are in, recycled brick may or may not be readily available. But the energy from deconstruction and cleaning old brick is almost certainly less than that needed for making new brick, so extending the material life in this way is a great way to save the embodied energy and extend the life of this material.

Types of Building Materials

Cement, bricks and tiles are the main building materials used in the construction of buildings. Today, increase in the demand for various building materials have led to many building material manufacturing companies. Many new building materials are environmental hazards, which have become a big concern to all.

Traditionally, the basic types of building materials used for construction were mud, stone and brush. Mud was used for filling the spaces between bricks and acted as a concrete and insulation. Centuries ago, houses were made entirely of dirt and clay. This was followed by the use of rocks (mainly granite) as building material. From the Neolithic period through the medieval age to modern times, granite has been commonly used as a building material. Brush structures were commonly seen in tropical areas and were made entirely from plant parts such as branches, bark, twigs and leaves. These structures were often used by Native Americans as resting places.

Stones and bricks were also common in construction. Different types of bricks have been and are still used for masonry. This includes specially shaped bricks for joints, striking and tooling, as well as glazed or rubbed bricks for decorative purposes.

Thatch is one of the oldest types of building material used for roofing. Another generic building material is wood. Because of the diverse character of different types of wood, it can be used for any type of structure in most climates. Even though wood structures were very common in earlier times, they disappeared with the approach of concrete structures.

Concrete is a composite building material comprised of aggregate and a binder (cement). Concrete finds good use in all types of building construction. Fly ash is a major ingredient in the concrete mix because of its lightweight and high thermal insulation.

More recently, new types of building materials are being used. These include metals (for the structural framework of larger buildings), plastics, asbestos and fabrics. Tar-based waterproof materials, paper linoleum, polyvinyl chloride clay and solvent coatings for inner wall are other building materials.
