Natural Stone Damage - 10 Tips on What to Avoid With Cleaning & Maintenance

Natural Stone includes granite, marble, onyx, travertine, soapstone, sandstone, quartzite, slate and limestone. There are many other types of natural stone, but not as commonly used.

It is imperative to know the exact type of stone that is to be maintained. Stone is natural and may have adverse reactions to certain cleaning chemicals and procedures. Most stones are also natural alkalis and so are dirt and soil; therefore, stone and dirt are attracted to each other which often makes cleaning very difficult. This makes the proper selection of cleaning procedures and chemicals for stone very complex.

1. Don't use cleaning products on or near your natural stone unless the label specifies that it is safe on natural marble or natural stone (cultured marble is man-made, and it's basically a plastic material). This includes glass cleaner to clean the mirror over a marble vanity top, or a liquid toilet bowl cleaner when the toilet is set on a marble floor.

2. Don't clean your natural stone with a solution of vinegar and water. Vinegar is highly acidic and will damage the stone.

3. Don't clean your natural stone using a solution of water with a commercially available cleaner, unless its label specifically indicates that it is safe to use on natural stone.

4. Don't use powder cleaners, cream cleansers, generic soap film removers, generic mildew stain removers or harsh disinfectants on your natural stone.

5. Don't leave spills, especially orange juice, lemonade, wine, vinegar, liquors, tomato sauce, yogurt, salad dressing, perfume, after shave, etc. Wipe up these types of spills right away, even if the natural stone has been sealed.

6. Don't use standard floor wax or other topical shine agents on your natural stone. It will only take away from the natural beauty of the stone and could lead to more costly and constant maintenance. If you want a shine to your stone, have your stone professionally polished.

7. Don't apply sealers to natural stone that has not been professionally cleaned. The sealers will trap in dirt and debris that may damage your stone over time. Also, do not use sealers that are not specifically noted safe for natural stone. If incorrect sealers are used, scuffing and peeling can also occur.

8. Don't place drinking glasses, plants, china, silver or hot items directly on any natural stone surface. Scratching, etching and other types of damage may occur.

9. Don't damp mop or wipe your natural stone with a cloth right after installation or grouting. While you may not cause any real damage, fine powder most likely left on the surface will be trapped in the water and may leave ugly and hard-to-remove streaks all over its surface.

10. Don't use any type of green or brown scouring pad on your natural stone. The presence of silicon carbide grits in them will scratch even the toughest granite.

  • Strand Bamboo Flooring: A Beautiful Choice For Your Home

    by Doug Watson

There has been a shift toward more environmentally friendly home building materials in recent years to such an extent that it is possible to build an entire home from materials that have been manufactured using more sustainable methods and materials. If you are remodeling your existing home you can choose from among these green products for your home improvement projects as well.

Strand bamboo flooring has become one of the more popular green building materials in recent times. To make it, many small bamboo fibers are compressed and bound together with adhesive to create planks. The adhesive used in the manufacturing process of this type of bamboo wood flooring makes it harder than almost all other types of wood flooring.

There are many benefits to choosing strand bamboo. It’s almost impossible to destroy, which is probably the most talked about advantage. You can do almost anything to your floor, without any damage. That’s due to the durability of the bamboo. This woven bamboo flooring is not soft and will not scratch as easily as other bamboo flooring.

Another great feature that this flooring offers is that it looks beautiful when installed in your home. It is very durable so it can stand up heavy use both inside and outside of the home. While it looks like traditional hardwood flooring it is much more durable and is easier to maintain than a hardwood floor.

Strand bamboo flooring is considered the latest material to provide the beauty of hardwood floors without the worry about depleting the environment. Bamboo grows rapidly and replenishes itself continually, making this the choice of environmentally aware citizens. If your desire is to “go green” then the unique qualities of bamboo will fill that need. You will be proud of your home when it is enhanced by this kind of flooring.

The Internet is the best place to find the many different styles of bamboo available. Retailers who focus on selling wood floors are always willing to help you create your ideal flooring plan. In order to get an accurate price quote, you should have measured the area you are wanting the flooring for. Strand bamboo flooring is so beautiful, you are bound to fall in love with it, no matter who you purchase it from.

Glass Use in Contemporary Residential Buildings

A lot of advancements have been made in the manufacturing techniques of glass products for use in residential buildings. It is no longer the huge energy consuming product it once was with a new generation of products that conserve energy, block UV rays, minimize heat gain or radiate heat and offer privacy with a flick of a switch.

The use of glass in architecture has increased significantly as it evolved into the high-tech product it is today. Because of its transparent quality, glass will always play a vital role in architecture as people want to be connected with the outside world and prefer natural bright spaces opposed to electronically lit spaces and at the same time save energy. Big windows and open architecture in a home bring the light in, provide the opportunity for a wonderful view and create a special ambience.

    Glass bricks

This material is not new to the building industry, but because of its structural properties, together with its transparency but at the same time providing privacy has remained a favourite in residential design. These bricks is not only aesthetically pleasing elements but also diffuses light into the home in such a way that overheating caused by the penetration of sunlight is reduced during the summer months. During the winter the thermal properties of glass bricks are comparable to double glazing.

    Frosted glass

This type of glass is produced by the acid etching of clear sheet glass. This renders the glass translucent, obscuring the view while still passing light.

    Laminated safety glass

This type of glass ensures your families' safety in the event of an accident and also makes it significantly more difficult for a burglar to gain entry trough such a glass barrier.

    Solar energy control glass

This is a type of laminated safety glass designed to keep out as much of the sun's UV rays and solar radiation through the glass without limiting the amount of natural light into the building. This type of glass is especially useful in the construction of skylights and curtain walls.

    Self-cleaning glass

Ideally used where windows or glass features are not within easy reach with a normal ladder. A titanium oxide coating ensures the break down of organic material when cleaned with warm soapy water and any residue washes away without leaving unsightly spots or streaks.

Recycled Wood: For a greener environment

Recycling, a process of converting scrap into reusable form has been term long associated with electronic, chemical, glass and textile items but recently. Recycled wood is the latest popular word among the responsible citizens who care for the environment and the future. The concept of recycled wood is becoming popular because of its environment friendly aspect. Apparently, reusing wood will lessen the demand for green wood and thereby save a lot of trees.

So how is the wood recycled? Mostly demolishers of old buildings and bridges carefully strip out the wood used in the structures before demolition. This salvaged wood is sold to the merchants, who then re-mill the wood by manually scanning it with a metal detector. This allows them to denial the entire piece of wood. This recycled wood or recycled timber is then often sold to the consumer as recycled flooring, beams and decking.

However, the use of recycled wood doesn’t only stay limited to the construction aspect of a human living. Recycled wood furniture is becoming quite popular among the homemakers these days. Not only because the Recycled Furniture is environment friendly, but also because it is rather affordable. People are fast doing away with the stigma of second hand stores and looking towards recycled furniture for home decorations. To suit their personalities, they get the furniture coated with trendy colors.

Another use of recycled wood comes across when you plan to pick up windows for your home. Though glass windows cannot be recycled commercially, people are using recycled windows to build up complete news structures in their backyard. A greenhouse or a sun house made from recycled windows can not only give a new dimension to your home but also save a large part of your budget, you thought of spending on new construction materials.

With the increase in consciousness among the consumers, the producers are also gradually becoming innovative in the use of recycled wood. Woods are now not only recycled but are made water resistant, termite resistant before they are sent in to the market. Home decorators are now suggesting use of recycled wood in making balconies, court yards and garden paving.

Before purchasing the wood, you can always ask the supplier about the origin of the wood. Some suppliers may fail to answer the proper source from where the wood came from; in that case you can consider a different supplier. Breathing becomes much easier in your home when you know that you have saved a tree and contributed towards building a greener environment for the future generation.

What Everyone Should Know About Insulated Concrete

ICF construction is rapidly gaining popularity in both the residential and non-residential markets. Within the last decade many homeowners, builders and architects have come to realize the superiority of the ICF construction. ICF buildings have higher energy savings, better fire resistance, and a superior structural integrity over traditional wood framed houses.

    ICF Construction

Insulating Concrete Forms are energy-efficient reinforced-concrete walls that are dry-stacked without using mortar and filled with concrete, think of them like Lego blocks. The blocks, or forms as the are referred to, are stacked to form exterior and interior walls, reinforcing steel or rebar is then added into the openings and then concrete is pumped in to form the structural element of the walls.

Insulated Concrete Forms are made from a variety of materials:

I Cement-bonded wood fiber (recycled waste wood and cement)
    II Cement-bonded polystyrene beads
    III Expanded polystyrene

One of the best ICFs are wood concrete forms, that is those that are made with cement-bonded wood fiber material that only uses natural ingredients. This combination of recycled waste wood and cement results in a better performing ICF wall system. If you are looking for ICFs you want to ensure you are looking for insulated concrete forms that are environmentally friendly. ICFs that are made from recycled material and do not contain or emit any toxic elements. Furthermore, insulated concrete forms that do not contain plastic, foams or polystyrenes are better for the environment than those that do contain these materials.

    Benefits of ICF Construction

ICF construction has many benefits over traditional wood frame construction.

    I Strength and Comfort
In ICF construction the walls and floors form one continuous surface. This will help to keep out insects and create an environment free of allergens, dust, mold and other irritants. Furthermore the insulated forms are virtually soundproof and keep out unwanted noises and distractions..

    II Structural Integrity
A building built with insulated concrete forms can stand up to winds of 200 miles per hour and resist fire for up to 3.5 hours. ICF homes have been know to withstand hurricanes, tornados and a wide range of weather conditions from coast to coast. Furthermore concrete does not rot when it gets wet, making the upkeep and repairs minimal.

    III Energy Performance
Using insulated concrete forms means that your walls are already insulated better than any wood frame house. The ICFs will help to keep your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter and you can save as much as 50-80% on heating and cooling costs.

    IV Green Building
ICFs are inherently green, from raw materials to installation. Depending on the product, you can find ICFs that have no CFCs, HCFCs or formaldehyde used in the manufacturing process and made from recycled material. Also, 100% of the installation waste, even the insulated forms themselves, are recyclable.

    Cement Association of Canada

The Cement Association of Canada has developed standardized ICF training modules to help facilitate greater adoption of ICF construction. Two of their main objectives are:

I To facilitate greater understanding and awareness of ICF construction as a viable building alternative, that will escalate its adoption in the residential and non-residential markets.

II To provide an industry baseline benchmark for required ICF training, ensuring adequate skills competence in the building workforce for the delivery of quality construction.

    The Danger of Asbestos

Asbestos is the collective term used to describe a family of several types of mineral fibrous rocks. There are currently six different regulated types of asbestos, with the three main types being Crocidolite, Amosite and Chrysolite.

Crocidolite which is usually blue can be found a lot in southern Africa, Australia and in Russia. The Amosite which is usually brown is most commonly found in Africa. The Chrysolite is of a white colour and can be found in different places all around the world. All those three types were actually imported a lot in the United Kingdom before being banned from use in the eighties for some and at the end of the nineties for others.

Asbestos fibres have been incorporated into many different materials and especially building materials since the end of the nineteenth century because of their useful properties. It was used as an acoustic insulator, a thermal insulator but also as fire proofing. The mineral fibre was actually known by the ancient Greek who recognized certain hazards of it. But its disadvantage is that it is a highly toxic material and can cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Asbestos fibres can be easily inhaled and can become lodged in the tissue of your chest and as a result, your body's natural defenses may not be able to break them down. This can then lead to lung diseases and cancer especially if you are exposed to the fibres repeatedly over a certain number of years.

Even though the white asbestos, also called chrysolite, is still used a lot in the United States and known as less dangerous as the other types of asbestos, it can still cause cancer in humans but with some uncertainty as to the scale of the risk involved there.

The first death recorded as related to asbestos occurred in 1906 and at the same period, scientists started to notice a large number of deaths and lung diseases in asbestos mining towns.
The British Lung Foundation carried out a survey recently that revealed that most tradespeople were actually unaware of the health risks posed by asbestos, and that they did not think about asking if there was any asbestos on the site they were working on.

Today, the best way to find out if there is asbestos in a building is to ask a company to carry out asbestos surveys. More and more companies have actually specialized in asbestos surveys as well as asbestos risk assessment and legionella risk assessment.

The author is working for a company doing asbestos surveys, asbestos management but also legionella risk assessment.

    EPS Geofoam Video Presentation

Benefits of utilizing EPS Geofoam: Zero net loading, ease and speed of construction, easily places by contractors with little or no experience, placed by hand, easily trimmed to size and placed by hand, large earth moving equipment is not needed for construction, construction without utility relocation, no utility relocation that should be considered in the design and selection process, placement in adverse weather conditions. Alleviates the cost of soft soil removal, excavation widening, temporary dewatering, possible need for excavation support system. Saves time. Reduces lateral stress on bridge approach abutments, Vertical embankments: Use of a fill geometry with vertical sides as opposed to the more traditional sloped-side geometry will provide the following advantages: The volume of fill material, especially of the EPS blocks, is minimized, which reduces both material cost and construction time. The footprint of the embankment and concomitant right-of-way acquisition is minimized, which can have cost, environmental potential, and other benefits. In areas where right of way is limited, EPS Geofoam can be constructed vertically and faced, unlike most other lightweight fill alternatives. No need for environmental permits: 1. Contains no CFC, HCFC, or HFC, Contains no formaldehyde, Can be recycled, Inert, non-nutritive, highly stable, Will not decompose, Will not decay, Will not produce gases. Vibration dampening for railway railroads Landscape fill Eliminates the need for surcharge Factors that influence costs of utilizing the various types of lightweight fills Fact: Placement and compaction costs can be higher for some types of lightweight fills than for conventional soil fill. Geofoam does not require moisture and compaction control, which allows placement in adverse conditions. Additionally, adverse weather conditions typically do not affect placement rates of Geofoam. Therefore, the higher material cost of EPS block Geofoam may be offset by lower installation costs. The difference between loose and compacted density of some lightweight fill materials should be considered in the transportation and placement cost. Price: Life cycle costs. What is cost-benefit analysis? A cost-benefit analysis considers the intangible consequences or impacts of an alternative in addition to the tangible costs and benefits. These intangible consequences may be required to perform an adequate cost comparison. How do you incorporate cost-benefit analysis? To incorporating the intangible benefits into a life-cycle or cost-benefit analysis involves trying to quantify the benefits. For example, the benefit of reduced construction time can be quantified by estimating the value that travelers place on travel time savings during periods of heavy congestion and incorporating the benefit into a life-cycle or cost benefit analysis. Intangible benefits: In summary, EPS Geofoam provides a number of intangible benefits such as, not requiring an environmental permit, Greater speed of construction, placement in adverse conditions, Long-term durability, Consistent material properties, No utility replacement that should be considered in the design and selection process.

Who Are the Concrete Countertop Manufacturers

Recently I did an extensive review of the concrete countertop market discovering an explosive industry.

I found 7 companies that make either their own concrete mixes or have a system that includes colorants, sealers, and methods for manufacturing. The concrete countertop manufacturers all seem busy even in the soft market.

After I finished the review I started finding even more who are getting into the market and some who are promoting various skim coats for making inexpensive countertops but with beautiful results. A few of the concrete countertop manufacturers have mixes that cure to an incredible 10,000 PSI. That's hard!

One company who is a manufacturer of self leveling concrete and terrazzo mixes has used their technology to develop a self leveling countertop mix. Actually this particular mix is ideal for creating unique custom artistic vessel sinks, concrete planters and bistro tables.

There are a few entrepreneurs who have built businesses specializing solely in the tools and equipment for manufacturing concrete countertops including all kinds of polishers, diamond pads, vibrators, tables and tools for creating custom edges.

Each of the concrete countertop manufacturers have training workshops and there are a few books and tutorial videos showing the processes.

It's easy to see when you look at the industry as a whole that there is going to be huge growth during the coming years. One company I spoke with has been making molds for the marble industry for 40 years. They are making a move into the market with molds for making concrete tile, showers, shower bases, tubs, sinks and lots more items like tables and furniture.

One company has a unique lightweight mix and another has developed carbon fiber reinforcement. These products are going to open up the potential for creating objects that would have been impossible to make with concrete until now.

In August there is an industry conference in Sacramento California where all the concrete countertop manufacturers will be with the artisans to share new ideas and showcase their products.

It's very exciting to see a new breed of creative individuals opening up new opportunities in a slow market.

Flagstone: The Benefits, Uses and Different Types of Flagstone

    by Kristie Brown
Flagstone is a relatively popular stone when it comes to home improvement projects. This stone is typically flat, and can be used for a number of different things. The rock in which this substance is derived from is a sedimentary type. When pulled, it is cut in such a manner that it can be used for projects like creating a walkway. There are many different components that are found in this stone type.

Many refer to it as "sandstone" as it contains so many different elements. It is common to find quartz, calcium, and silica in this type of rock. This stone can be found exhibiting a number of different colors. The flexible color schemes make it an ideal solution for various projects in and around the home. You can find colors like browns, blues, reds, and even mixed colors. Here, you will learn a few interesting things about flagstone as well as a few ideas for integrating the use of this rock.

Granite Countertops and Tile: The Pros and Cons of This Popular Stone

    by Kristie Brown

Granite is becoming a popular choice when it comes to home improvement and remodeling projects. This is natural substance, which is often considered a bit more durable than other products created synthetically for the home. This particular substance is actually a type of rock that is considered to be igneous.
There are many different elements that are part of granite. First, you have the element of mica. There is actually just small amounts of this element contained in this particular substance. You can also find feldspar and quartz in this particular type of rock. The two most common types of home improvement and repair products available to home owners are granite Tile and granite Countertops. Here, you will learn more about these products.

What is Granite Tile Widely Used For?

There are many popular uses when it comes to granite tile. One of the most obvious uses is that in which an individual places it on the floors of their home. However, many individuals elect to place these tile pieces in and around the home in a more decorative manner. A good example is when one decides to integrate a fireplace in the home. Many may decide to use this style of tile around the front facing of the fireplace, as well as in front of the fireplace on the floor. There are many who choose to use this type of tile on the countertops in the kitchen and in the bathroom. This can really spruce up the appearance of a standard room. Many have even added tile created from granite around swimming pools and around Jacuzzis.

The Benefits of Using Granite for Tile and Countertops

There are many different benefits of using tile that is composed of granite for tile and countertops. One of the main advantages, we have already mentioned, and that is the overall durability of the product. The next advantage is, unlike other types of products used for coverings of countertops and similar areas; this product is resistant to scratches. Many, who choose to implement the use of a sealant on this type of product, have found that the granite actually experiences very little complication when it comes to stains. If you elect to granite tile in your home, you will find that it has a natural resistance to heat.

Disadvantages to Using Granite for Countertops and Tile

Now, as you can see, there are a number of advantages to using granite in the home. However, there are a couple of disadvantages that you should also be aware of prior to implementing this type of product in your home. First, the material that is required to create home pieces such as countertops is relatively expensive. This means not all people will be able to budget this type of material. In addition to this, the material is very heavy. This means that if it will be used on counters, the shelving and vanities that support it will need to be able to withstand the material. If they cannot do this, then it will become necessary to replace these items with products that can withstand more weight overall.

    Conclusion

Granite tile and granite countertops may be a consideration if you are looking to remodel your home. There are a number of advantages to using this type of material which we have covered above. However, you should also consider the possible disadvantages as well when making your decision. If you want to make a change that will bring a whole new look and feel to your home, and significantly add more resale value to your home, granite tile may be right for your next renovation project.

The Advantages Of A Metal Building

When it comes time to decide what material to use for construction of a large or small building, metal is often the final decision. There are many advantages to steel buildings, especially when compared to traditional building materials, whether they are put together by a building firm or come straight from a metal building manufacturer.

In the past, wood and brick were the materials used most commonly in construction. These days, with the introduction of steel buildings that have been pre-engineered, everything is very different. This way of constructing buildings is more flexible than other approaches, better for the environment, and inexpensive to implement. Metal buildings are constructed for a wide range of purposes all over the world today.

Another reason so many companies choose to construct steel buildings is because metal building manufacturers are well known for providing excellent services to the client and making sure everything is implemented successfully. The entire process from start to finish goes more smoothly with metal construction methods.

Steel building manufacturers start by finding out what your needs are, and then come up with an initial design. These companies will work with your business to navigate the world of building codes and other rules that metal buildings must follow. Whether you're building a pole barn, storage building, or metal garage, certain specifications have to be met for construction to move forward.

The manufacturer also comes up with detailed blueprints and procedures for fitting and erecting the metal building. If your business doesn't already have a general contractor, manufacturers often find one for you. Prefab buildings are the most convenient way to construct a building and have it finished in a short period of time. Companies that construct prefab buildings may also give suggestions pertaining to doors, windows, and other design features such as layout, so that the entire project goes smoothly and efficiently.

The manufacturer even comes up with finished plans so that the whole project will go off without a hitch. Businesses continue to use metal building manufacturers because they provide all the services you need for construction. And it doesn't matter what type of building you wish to construct - a pole barn, storage buildings, or a metal garage - metal building manufacturers will cater to the client's needs.

All pieces are custom-made to fit when they arrive on the construction site, and don't require any modifications, so that all the work that occurs on site is focused on erecting the building in the fastest amount of time possible. This saves plenty in construction costs and ensures that your building goes up quickly.

You can expect savings of about a third of what you pay for traditional materials, even if the price of metal fluctuates. The savings come from the lower labor costs as well as the faster construction time.

Metal buildings even allow for companies to expand in a cost-effective manner as their needs change and develop over time. All you have to do is order more metal panel and framing, and you can proceed with construction without getting in the way of running your business.

Waukesha White Stone - Create a Tranquil Backyard Pond With This Uniquely Versatile Stone

Many homeowners are starting to add the ornamental pond to their property in order to enhance the overall look and feel associated with the home. While there are many different types of decorative small ponds that can be created, the Waukesha white stone wallstone pond is becoming one of the most sought after designs when it comes to ornamental ponds. Here, I will provide some basic insight on how you can go about creating a Waukesha white stone wallstone pond.

    The Basics

When creating a wallstone pond with Waukesha white stone, it is important to know and understand that you will need a few basic supplies. First, of course, you will need an amount of Waukesha white stone that is relevant to the size of the pond that you are creating. For a basic ten by ten pond, you may need anywhere from 500 to 1,000 pieces of white stone. It all depends on the depth of the pond, and the size of Waukesha stone that you elect to use. You will also need some cement mix, as well as the tools that are required to lay and layer the cement that you will use.

    Simple Construction

Once you have gathered your Waukesha white stone and the cement that is necessary to create your pond, it is time to get ready to construct your decorative pond. The simplest construction involves the ornamental pond that is circular in shape. You will want to outline the area where you will place the pond and lay down a section of cement. Once the circle has been filled, you should lay your first line of Waukesha white stone all the way around the circle. It is important that each piece of stone is stuck down into the cement so when it dries, it will be sturdy. This is when you should connect a small drainage pipe on the structure. This will allow water to drain when you feel the need to clean the structure.

Once the initial cement and line of Waukesha white stone completely dries and is set, you can place a layer of cement on top of these stones and then add the second layer. It is important that you continue this trend, until all of the stones are placed in such a manner that your depth is achieved. Once this is done, you should then allow the cement to dry. Once the cement on the Waukesha white stones are dry, you should then place cement inside the dimension of the pond. It is important to ensure that this is set as smooth and evenly as possible. Once this is dry, you can then add a basic pond liner and a cap to the end of the drainage pipe that you installed earlier. You are then ready to fill and decorate your pond with plants, and other items! Once this is done, you have successfully finished your Waukesha white stone decorative wallstone pond!

Defective Concrete is Being Used on Las Vegas Airport Runway

It is not your everyday construction project.

"Not a curb, not a sidewalk, not a slab on grade, this is a runway tarmac. This is heavy equipment on it and people," explained John Zedler.

They are not building a runway, but it has to be as safe and as strong for planes to taxi and park.

"This is very serious. This is an airport. You got people all over the world coming to Las Vegas," said John.

    John Zedler knows concrete.

"From my notes, maybe 10% of it was right and 90% of it was wrong," explained John.

He is a licensed, certified concrete inspector who worked for Western Technologies on two airport construction sites.

Concrete has to meet specifications including numeric field tests to ensure it is strong enough, hard enough and structurally sound.

"The reason why we have those specifications is because you could get structural fractures, movement and a lot of other things," said John.

Each cement truck contains about 10 yards of concrete and according to John's field journal, load after load was failing the tests.

Even so, he says contractors knowingly poured about 8 football fields worth of unsafe concrete at McCarran International Airport.

"I would call out the actual number. The gentleman writing down the field notes on the paperwork would actually change it to make it pass," said John.

If they have to pull concrete out and do it again, it costs a ton of time and time, as they say, is money.

Contact 13 obtained John's field notes and the reports Western Technologies gave to the Department of Aviation.

Time after time, the paperwork does not match up.

In some cases, the failing number is scratched out and a passing one is written over it.

"It is not right. I told my supervisor. I told my company. I have even spoke with the other contractors and sub-contractors out there," said John.

But he says they just blew it off and started taking work away from him.

Guidelines to Nails and their Uses by KiyaSama

Nails are also made for joining materials other than wood: masonry nails, roofing nails, drywall nails. Shanks of nails may be ringed, spiraled, or barbed for greater holding power.
Nails come in different shapes for different jobs:
    a) Common or box nail (big, flat head, box nail is thinner than common nail) вЂ" It’s used for rough work, nailing 2 by 4s. There are three basic sizes of the common nail: 10 (3-inch) for toe-nailing, 16 (31/2 inch) for face-to-edge nailing, 20 (4-inch) for nailing through one board into the end of another.
    b) Finishing nail (small head with a depression in it) вЂ" It is used for finer work. Its head can be concealed below the wood’s surface.
    c) Casing nail (small tapered head with no depression) вЂ" It’s used for nailing exterior trim. It can be left flush or set below the surface of the wood.
    Nailing Tips:
    1. If the wood is hard, drill a hole smaller than the nail in the place where the nail will go.
    2. At the end of the board, blunt the nail with a hammer so it will punch through wood rather than wedge it apart.
    3. Put oil or soap or candle wax or beeswax on nails to make for easier nailing into the wood.
    4. Hold the nail between your thumb and forefinger for nailing. Nails too small? Use a paper clip, tweezers, bobby pin, comb (hold between the teeth), fork.
    5. To nail two boards together, nail first through the thin one, then the thick one. Slanting the nails gives more security.
    6. To prevent wood from splitting, try staggering the nails rather than placing them in a straight line.
    7. Tap until the nail is planted. Hit the head of the nail with heavier and heavier blows as it becomes more securely implanted in the wood.
    8. To remove a nail: cushion the wood by putting scrap wood under the hammer head and lever out the nail with the claw.
    9. For most nails, use a 14-16 ounce hammer. For brads (small thin nails), use a tack hammer.
