Recently I did an extensive review of the concrete countertop market discovering an explosive industry.
I found 7 companies that make either their own concrete mixes or have a system that includes colorants, sealers, and methods for manufacturing. The concrete countertop manufacturers all seem busy even in the soft market.
After I finished the review I started finding even more who are getting into the market and some who are promoting various skim coats for making inexpensive countertops but with beautiful results. A few of the concrete countertop manufacturers have mixes that cure to an incredible 10,000 PSI. That's hard!
One company who is a manufacturer of self leveling concrete and terrazzo mixes has used their technology to develop a self leveling countertop mix. Actually this particular mix is ideal for creating unique custom artistic vessel sinks, concrete planters and bistro tables.
There are a few entrepreneurs who have built businesses specializing solely in the tools and equipment for manufacturing concrete countertops including all kinds of polishers, diamond pads, vibrators, tables and tools for creating custom edges.
Each of the concrete countertop manufacturers have training workshops and there are a few books and tutorial videos showing the processes.
It's easy to see when you look at the industry as a whole that there is going to be huge growth during the coming years. One company I spoke with has been making molds for the marble industry for 40 years. They are making a move into the market with molds for making concrete tile, showers, shower bases, tubs, sinks and lots more items like tables and furniture.
One company has a unique lightweight mix and another has developed carbon fiber reinforcement. These products are going to open up the potential for creating objects that would have been impossible to make with concrete until now.
In August there is an industry conference in Sacramento California where all the concrete countertop manufacturers will be with the artisans to share new ideas and showcase their products.
It's very exciting to see a new breed of creative individuals opening up new opportunities in a slow market.
